Before He Died, Alan Rickman Made A last Video

“Together, you and this tortoise can make a difference.” by @TheBadness1

The entertainment world has taken a hit this January, as some of the greats have passed on during the month. Among those lost and being remembered is British actor Alan Rickman, who passed away at the age of 69 on January 14. He is best known for his stage performances in theater, but also his roles in Harry Potter, Die Hard, and Love Actually.

While the actor often performed in blockbuster films, he also participated in some smaller projects geared towards helping those in need.

One of the last things Rickman helped make was an example of the latter: Just weeks before his passing, Rickman did the voiceover for a YouTube video of a tortoise eating a strawberry. Though the concept sounds inane at first, the idea behind the video is actually something quite wonderful — it’s to help fundraise money for refugees.

“We’re trying to make a viral video to help refugees,” says Rickman in a voiceover. “We’re slowly gathering views as this tortoise munches away. It works like this: The more views the video gets, the more advertising revenue YouTube will give us. We give that money to Save the Children and the Refugee Council. What you need to do is watch and share. Together, you and this tortoise can make a difference.”

As Rickman states, the money collected from the video views will go toward refugees by way of Save the Children and Refugee Council. Viewers can also help by donating directly to these organizations, volunteering or even campaigning for the cause as many of these refugees do not have a voice that’s being heard, and need others to speak up for them.

It’s pretty wonderful that one of the last things Rickman left us was this video, as a message of helping others is a beautiful sentiment to leave on this Earth.
